Dr. Scott’s Research Leads to New PSA

Dr. Scott’s research has been integrated and featured in a new PSA highlighting the importance of “Reading the Right Books at the Right Time.” In her groundbreaking and impactful research, Dr. Scott showed that babies from 6- to 9-month-old exhibit increased attention and learning, which is accompanied by more specialized brain responses, when their parents read them books with individual names for characters (e.g., “Mr. Wigglesworth”). On the other hand, books with characters who are named generically (e.g., “elephant”) or not named do not increase learning in infants under 9 months of age.

This PSA video based on Dr. Scott’s research on book reading was created by Dr. Rob Carpenter. This production brought together Sujata Gupta (Social Science Writer) and Katie Whitehouse (Senior Legislative Assistant) and was produced through Jacobs Foundation’s Learning Sciences Exchange Fellowship (LSX).
